Special News from NASPA

As we wrap up the year, I wanted to highlight some unique engagement opportunities just for graduate students. Make sure to check these out, as you have the opportunity to win and/or apply for registrations and money for the 2015 NASPA Annual Conference in New Orleans!

For first-time attendees to a NASPA Annual Conference, five graduate students (masters and doctoral level) will receive a waived Annual Conference registration and a $200 stipend.  

In order to qualify, an application must be submitted by January 20Note you also have to participate in the 15 Days of NASPA campaign (more below). More information, including application requirements, can be found here. If you are not eligible to apply for the #NASPAshares stipend but would like to get involved, feel free to sign up as a reviewer of the submissions in Volunteer Central.

In addition to the scholarships, NASPA is also giving everyone (NASPA members and non-members of all levels) the opportunity to win free NASPA stuff, including NASPA schwag bags, bookstore certificates, and complimentary registrations to #NASPA15. All you have to do is participate in 15 Days of NASPA! 

Fifteen winners will be randomly drawn and win the prizes in the following breakdown:

·         NASPA Bookstore gift certificates
·         3 #NASPA15 Pre-conference workshop registrations

A unique opportunity for graduate students attending #NASPA15, the NASPA New Professionals & Graduate Student Symposium is an opportunity for these two groups to learn, share, network, and develop both personally and professionally. This opportunity allows graduate students and new professionals to draw on their first years of experience to improve their overall effectiveness, to learn from others, as well as to develop personal awareness. Individuals attending will be tracked by professional level, as well as participate in large group exercises.


The Doctoral Seminar was created to provide graduate students who are currently enrolled in a higher education doctoral program support and information to help them successfully navigate the process. Faculty and doctoral students will facilitate activities, conversations, and structured time to reflect about how to be successful in the doctoral experience. This free seminar will include time for networking with faculty and doctoral student peers.

Participants will…
·         Reflect on the doctoral journey…beginning, sustaining, planning, completing
·         Broaden their faculty and student support networks
·         Consider the dissertation process and what it involves
·         Create a goal(s) and find an accountability partner to help meet them

StudentAffairs.com Graduate Manuscript Competition

For the past two years StudentAffairs.com has sponsored a graduate manuscript competition for our ejournal, The Journal of Technology in Student Affairs, a forum for the student affairs generalist on issues relating to student affairs and technology. They will, once again, be sponsoring this competition. For more information, click here. Submission guidelines can be found at the Submit page.

The deadline is Friday, February 20, 2015 at 4:00PM EST. Submissions can be sent to Stuart@StudentAffairs.com. There is a lot of solid scholarship going on in Masters and Doctoral programs and StudentAffairs.com would like to tap into that reservoir. As with previous years, there will be three prizes awarded to graduate students (registered for a minimum of six credits for Spring 2015) in a Masters or Doctoral program in student personnel administration, higher education, counseling, educational leadership or a related program:

  • 1st place - $250.00
  • 2nd place - $200.00
  • 3rd place - $100.00

Graduate Student Bloggers Needed!

StudentAffairs.com is looking for one or two graduate students to write the weekly blog for the 2015 Student Affairs Job Hunt.

Interested graduate students should submit one writing sample that would be in line with what would appear on the Student Affairs Job Hunt as opposed to simply a writing sample from a course or a personal log. Submissions are due by Wednesday, January 8, 2015. 

There is a small stipend and the blog will be anonymous to give students more freedom in writing about their experiences. StudentAffairs.com is looking for individuals that can write interesting, fun, enlightening, edgy, eye-opening blogs. This would take someone who is not afraid to keep a blog and who is a good, creative writer. Students can get an idea of what they are looking for by reviewing past StudentAffairs.com Blogs.

StudentAffairs.com 2015 Virtual Case Study Competition

StudentAffairs.com announces the launch of their 14th Annual Virtual Case Study Competition for Masters level students in student personnel administration, counseling or higher education administration graduate programs. Members of the top three teams will earn cash prizes.

  • 1st place - $150.00 for each team member
  • 2nd place - $100.00 for each team member
  • 3rd place - $50.00 for each team member

Summer Internship Opportunity - NJ Office of the Secretary of Higher Education

The NJ Office of the Secretary of Higher Education; Trenton, NJ: The NJ Office of the Secretary of Higher Education is seeking a Summer Intern for 2014. The start date would be June 30, 2014 and the end date would be August 29, 2014. The minimum education requirement is a bachelor’s degree. The hourly rate is $31.68 per hour; 1 to 2 years of experience is needed. The EOF program needs a new application and graduate grant payment process to be created in Access or Excel that will meet the following requirements: (1) A secure, on-line application that institutions can access from the EOF website and send to our office via e-mail; (2) A data base to store the key components of the applications; (3) Certification roster- to be able to use the information in the completed application to populate and produce a certification roster for each campus program that includes the students’ names, social security #s, and amount of the term grant request. The certification roster will be sent to each campus program to confirm that the students listed are actually enrolled and the amount of the grant request for each term is accurate; (4) Payment list- for each campus program produce a list of the students to be paid a graduate EOF grant each term, the amount of the grant for each student and the total amount of Article III EOF graduate grant funds that should be sent to that particular institution. This list is used by the EOF accountant whose office is currently located at HESAA to issue payments to the campus programs; (5) Reconciliation Roster-a final list of students who were paid a graduate EOF grant. The reconciliation roster will be sent to each program to confirm that the students were actually enrolled, maintained full-time enrollment, and were credited with the grant amount listed. Refunds are submitted to the EOF accountant; (6) A method to keep tract of institutional allocations as compared to the institutions total EOF Article III graduate grant requests; (7) A method to track the history of the number of EOF graduate student grant payments each student receives since students are only eligible for a maximum number of payments based on the type of degree they are pursuing; and (8) The creation of a manual that explains how the data base operates and what steps are required to make changes to the original product.
